Local transport service Saxony-Anhalt
The transport service Sachsen-Anhalt GmbH ( NASA ) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the State of Saxony-Anhalt . It plans, orders and pays for local rail passenger transport (SPNV) under the regionalization law for a route network of 1,680 kilometers with 321 stations (status: 2007).
tasks
As a public transport authority, NASA tries to promote competition between the railway companies by tendering rail transport services . For this purpose, an integral cycle schedule was developed, which also takes into account the schedule coordination between train and bus. As the customer, she determines how often trains travel on which routes and pays for these services. The RUs that operate the local rail transport could not exist from the income from ticket sales alone.
However, there are contractually agreed penalties for trains that are delayed, smeared or canceled . In 2015 there was a record total fine of more than 20 million euros, in 2016 it was 15.3 million euros. In the event of delays due to construction sites, NASA sometimes waives payment.
With the help of new on-board computers and the associated software, NASA wants to improve real-time data transmission, connection security and ticket sales.

Order volume
In 2007, the two EVUs DB Regio AG and Transdev Sachsen-Anhalt GmbH ordered transport services amounting to around 25 million train kilometers ( train km). 88.4 percent of this was attributable to DB Regio AG, which also includes the regional brands Burgenlandbahn and Elbe-Saale-Bahn . NASA subsidized this local rail transport with 257.3 million euros. This means that an ordered train-kilometer cost an average of 10.29 euros in 2007.
Due to the reduction in regionalization funds from 2006, NASA began to investigate the regional rail transport worthiness of six railway lines . As a result of the timetable change in December 2007, traffic on the Merseburg – Halle-Nietleben , Köthen – Aken and Lutherstadt Wittenberg – Bad Schmiedeberg routes was canceled. On the last-mentioned route, however, passenger traffic could initially be maintained to a lesser extent until 2010, as the Wittenberg district invested part of the funds earmarked for rail replacement traffic in demand-oriented train traffic.
On the Merseburg – Schafstädt , Berga-Kelbra – Stolberg and Naumburg – Teuchern routes , there was a reduction in the number of train services. The order volume thus decreased in 2007 by around 234,000 train km compared to the previous year.
Due to the low passenger demand, the remaining local rail transport on the Naumburg Ost – Teuchern route was discontinued in December 2010. In December 2011, the Berga-Kelbra-Stolberg and Biederitz-Loburg routes followed, the latter not being discontinued because of insufficient passenger demand, but because of the poor state of the infrastructure and the no longer tenable timetable. In August 2014 NASA announced that the Merseburg – Schafstädt, Pratau – Bad Schmiedeberg and Klostermansfeld – Wippra connections would be canceled between December 2014 and April 2015 due to low demand and negative developments in recent years. The canceled local rail transport connections received a replacement offer through state-financed regional bus routes that are known as the state network .

School holiday ticket model casting
Since 2001, NASA has been holding a model competition to find the faces for the school holiday ticket . Well over 2000 young people from Saxony-Anhalt take part every year. In 2007, according to a press release, over 2000 people came to the casting . The selection process took place in the summer of the previous year.
Abbreviation NASA
The abbreviation used mainly in connection with the American space organization NASA has the following reason: Abbreviations such as NS or NSA would have been too reminiscent of National Socialism , NVSA of the NVA .
