The Weißenfels – Zeitz railway is a single-track main line in the south of Saxony-Anhalt . It runs from Weißenfels via Teuchern to Zeitz and is one of the main lines of the Burgenland Railway .

history

The Weißenfels-Zeitz Railway was opened by the Thuringian Railway Company between Weißenfels, Zeitz and Gera in 1859 . In 1882 management was taken over by the Prussian State Railways . In its early days, the route was mainly used to transport industrial goods from Zeitz in the direction of Halle and Erfurt. Today it connects the Halle – Bebra railway and the Leipzig – Gera railway .

After the Second World War, the second track was dismantled. During the GDR era, sugar beet from the Thuringian Basin , cement from Karsdorf and coal from the Profen area were among other things . The route also served as a diversion route for the Thuringian Railway. In the 1980s, during the expansion of the Thuringian Railway between Naumburg and Weißenfels, numerous scheduled freight trains and international express trains ran between Weißenfels and Teuchern.

Burgenlandbahn train in Weißenfels

Burgenlandbahn GmbH took over operations as a joint subsidiary of DB Regio AG and Karsdorfer Eisenbahngesellschaft at the beginning of 1999. The route was part of the contract for the Saxony-Anhalt South network with the state of Saxony-Anhalt, which ran until December 31, 2006. The passenger traffic was carried out with LVT / S of the Burgenland Railway. First every second railcar coming from Weißenfels was combined with the one coming from Naumburg and separated again in the opposite direction . The timetable from 1999 therefore still lists a consistent hourly service with two-hour direct connections to and from Naumburg. In December 2010 the passenger train service on the Naumburg branch was stopped.

After the second invitation to tender, carried out in 2003, the network was awarded again to the now pure DB subsidiary Burgenlandbahn for a further twelve years until 2018. This contract was extended in January 2017 and ran until December 14, 2019.

The route was not included in the Saxony-Anhalt diesel network , but was put out to tender in 2017 together with the Merseburg – Müuellen – Querfurt route . In October 2018, DB Regio was awarded the contract for the new Elster-Geiseltal network and will probably operate the route with class 641 railcars until December 2032 .

traffic

Today the passenger trains run with a basic cycle of two hours, which is compressed on working days. In freight transport, tank car trains are driven from Großkorbetha in the direction of Gera / Lederhose if necessary .

Route description

West from the station Weissenfels the route branches from the direction in Naumburg (Saale) leading the main section of the Thüringer path to the south and crosses in separate, parallel leading bridges the two Saale arms . The route then circles the Weißenfels district of Beuditz to the west in a full arc (diameter around 1000 meters) . The route then turns south, passes Langendorf and reaches the stop of the same name north of Prittitz . From there the route runs to the southeast, crosses under the federal motorway 9 and reaches Teuchern , where the Naumburg – Teuchern railway joins when coming from the southwest . The partly disused railway line Großkorbetha – Pörsten – Hohenmölsen – Deuben flows between Teuchern and Deuben . In Deuben there are connecting lines to the lignite industry (briquette factory, power station) of MIBRAG . The route then bypasses the historic Louise mine near Theißen . The railway crossing there with the federal highway 91 caused frequent traffic jams in the 1990s. The railway line turns in a right-hand arc to the south and joins the Leipzig – Gera railway line, which runs in the valley of the White Elster . As far as Zeitz station, branches cross the Zeitz-Aylsdorf marshalling yard, where the Altenburg – Meuselwitz – Zeitz line joins.
