The Zeitz station is the station of the city of Zeitz in Burgenlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt. It was opened in 1859 and developed into a large railway junction with five routes. The station building is a listed building.

location

The train station is in the north of the city on the White Elster . It borders on Baenschstrasse and Schädestrasse. The route to Leipzig runs northeast, where the routes to Weißenfels, Altenburg and Tröglitz also branch off. Head southwest to Probstzella.

history

The first line that Zeitz opened up was the line from Weißenfels on February 9, 1859. At the same time, the Zeitz – Gera section of the Leipzig – Probstzella railway went into operation. With the opening of the northern section of the Leipzig – Probstzella railway line, Zeitz Pbf received a railway connection to Leipzig on October 20, 1873.

On June 19, 1872 Zeitz received Sächs with the Zeitz station . Star one more station. It was the starting point of the Zeitz – Altenburg railway and was operated by the Royal Saxon State Railways. On May 31, 1913, this station was closed. One day later, on June 1, 1913, the Zeitz Gbf freight station north of the passenger station was opened under Prussian administration. On December 1, 1913, the Tröglitz – Zeitz line was opened as a connecting line for goods traffic in the direction of Altenburg. It was in operation until September 30, 2009.

The Zeitz – Camburg railway line, opened in 1897, ended in the separate "Camburg station" until 1914 due to the high utilization of the tracks in Zeitz station. This station, also known as the Thuringian train station, was located next to today's reception building. After its completion in 1912, the old station was demolished. In April 1914, the railway facilities in Zeitz were completely redesigned. A common train station was set up.

In order to get to the train station across the White Elster , the Dreierbrücke was built in 1879 . The construction was carried out by private investors, as the city of Zeitz lacked the financial means. Initially, three pfennigs were earned from each user of the bridge. After the private parts of the bridge were bought by the city in 1914, these usage fees ceased to exist.

Passenger traffic on the railway to Camburg was discontinued in 1999. In 2000 the railway line was shut down. Passenger traffic on the Zeitz – Meuselwitz section of the railway line to Altenburg was discontinued on September 28, 2002; the railway line to Tröglitz has been a siding for the Zeitz chemical and industrial park since December 12, 2012. In September 2015, a public expression of interest for the building began in order to find suitable tenants. The station has belonged to the city of Zeitz since the beginning of January 2016.

Platforms and tracks

The station once had a total of 16 tracks (see table) and four platforms. All of them are central platforms . The station building is located south of these platforms. Next to it was the railway administration of the Altenburg-Zeitzer railway company . There were several sidings to local factories.

Today the station has four platforms, only two of which are still in use. The platform length of these two platforms used is between 230 and 270 meters and their tracks are numbered from five to eight. Most trains only stop at tracks seven and eight.

Signal boxes

Zeitz station has four SuH 1907 electromechanical interlockings. B2 and B7 are dispatcher interlockings, W6 and W8 command-dependent guard interlockings. As is typical with this type of interlocking, the track systems are secured with form signals. Only B2 already operates light signals.

Transport links

It is estimated that around 900 to 1000 people use the station every working day.
