The Alstom Coradia A TER vehicles , also known by the nickname “Whale (fish)”, are one-piece diesel railcars. Its development began as a joint project between Deutsche Bahn AG and the French SNCF with the rail vehicle manufacturers De Dietrich Ferroviaire and Linke-Hofmann-Busch . They were produced in a division of labor by these companies, which today belong to the Alstom Group as Alstom Transport Germany and Alstom DDF . TER stands for Transport express regional .

Constructive features

The vehicles are equipped with Scharfenberg couplings. Up to three railcars can be driven in multiple controls. The six-cylinder common rail diesel engines come from MAN , the fluid transmission from Voith . In addition to the hydrodynamic retarder brake, the railcars have disc brakes. The arrangement of the two drive systems in front of the bogies, the cambered shape of the car body made from extruded aluminum profiles and the large one-piece swing doors give the vehicle its characteristic appearance, which has earned it the nickname whale in Germany and the nickname Baleine bleue (blue whale) in France . The low-floor area between the bogies has a floor height of 550 mm. The car body was equipped with absorbers at the head ends to absorb the impact energy in the event of a possible collision. The driver's cabs made of fiberglass are attached and glued to the head ends.

commitment

Class 641 of the Deutsche Bahn

40 units of this series were delivered to Deutsche Bahn AG, four of which were retired after accidents. Some railcars are currently parked due to a lack of demand due to line closures and reassignments.

They are used in Baden-Württemberg on the Upper Rhine  - between Basel Badischer Bahnhof and Erzingen (Baden)  - and in Thuringia from Erfurt , including on the Schwarzatalbahn , between Gotha and Bad Langensalza and between Erfurt and Leinefelde. When the timetable changed on June 9, 2013, six railcars were relocated from Erfurt to Hof . The trains are required between Lichtenfels and Bayreuth or Hof. Since the summer timetable change in June 2016, DB Regio Südost has been serving the route between Leipzig Hbf and Geithain via Bad Lausick with four modernized 641s . Six railcars have been in use in the Elster-Geiseltal network since December 2019.

They also ran on the Gotha – Graefenroda line until December 2011, on the Weimar – Kranichfeld line and between Saalfeld and Blankenstein until June 2012 and on the Sömmerda – Großheringen and Fröttstädt – Friedrichroda lines until December 2017 .

SNCF X 73500

Other members of the family Alstom Coradia A TER were of De Dietrich delivered to the French SNCF. These vehicles, approved for a top speed of 140 km / h, are listed by the SNCF as X 73500. 312 railcars were delivered to the SNCF between 1999 and 2004. For cross-border traffic between Germany and France, 19 more vehicles were procured as X 73900, two of which (X 73914 and 73915) were paid for by Saarland and painted traffic red . This series can also be coupled with the DB series 641 and has the German PZB 90 train protection system .

CFL 2100

The Luxembourg CFL received six copies from De Dietrich, which were designated 2101-2106. In 2006 they were taken over by the SNCF as X 73813–818.
