The city of Querfurt is located in the southeastern Harz foreland in the valley of the eponymous Querne . It flows through the old town from west to east.

First, on May 11, 1995, Gatterstädt and Lodersleben were incorporated into the Querfurt administrative community . In a register of the tithe of the Hersfeld monastery that was created between 881 and 899, Querfurt is mentioned for the first time in a document as the place of Curnfurt im Friesenfeld, which has to be titled . The neighboring village of Kunisch , which no longer exists today, is also mentioned there. Querfurt was the ancestral seat of the noble lords of Querfurt . 974 is given as the year of birth of St. Brun von Querfurt as the first recorded representative of this noble family.

The inner city wall is mentioned in a document from 1198, which means that Querfurt already had city rights at that time. In 1357 a second, the outer city wall was built.

On April 13, 1621, 101 houses were destroyed in a city fire. In 1663 Querfurt became the residence of the imperial principality of Saxony-Querfurt . The city was the seat of the Saxon office of Querfurt until 1815 . From 1816 to 1994 the city was the seat of the district of Querfurt .

The county government of was Querfurt 1816-1952 seat district Querfurt and 1952-1994 of the circle Querfurt , who in 1994 with the Merseburg to merseburg-querfurt (with the county seat in Merseburg merged). In 2007, the Saalekreis district was created through the merger of the Saalkreis and Merseburg-Querfurt districts .

Shortly before the American ground troops marched in, Querfurt was unprepared at noon on April 11, 1945, the alternative target of a squadron of six Douglas A-26 bombers of the 9th Air Force, which had not been deployed in Naumburg. They dropped their bombs in a residential area (An der Geistpromenade, Lindenstrasse, Daheimstrasse), destroying or damaging a number of houses and killing 26 people. There are 24 names on the memorial column “On the Spirit Promenade”.

On September 24, 2017, the non-party Andreas Nette was elected mayor as a candidate of the SPD with 70.6 percent of the valid votes in the first ballot. Nicole Rotzsch had previously become mayor on March 1, 2015; On July 1, 2015, she took over the office from her predecessor Peter Kunert (FDP), who had been mayor since reunification. In June 2017 Rotzsch announced that she would resign from this post on August 6, 2017 in order to be able to become managing director of the curative educational aid in Querfurt.

Twin cities

  • Karlstadt in Bavaria - The city of Karlstadt was founded in 1202 by Konrad von Querfurt , the then Bishop of Würzburg. Because of this relationship, the two cities sealed their partnership in 1990.

  • Memorial stele in the street “An der Geistpromenade” for the victims of the US air raid on April 11, 1945 It was renewed in 2016 with donations from the population. Above the 24 names one can read the inscription: "On April 11, 1945, 24 citizens of the district town of Querfurt fell victim to the American bomb terror".
  • Memorial plaque at the south entrance of the town hall for the anti-fascist Otto Dietrich, who died in 1945 as a result of his imprisonment in a concentration camp . He is also honored with a memorial stone in the local cemetery .
  • Commemorative plaque on the house at Kirchplan 7, the birthplace of the natural scientist Jacob Christian Schäffer , honored here as the "founder of mushroom science and inventor of wood paper". This plaque dates from 1968; the external occasion was Schäffer's 250th birthday. In 2013, another board was attached to the house at Kirchplan 7, providing more detailed information about Schäffer's research. On June 2, 2018, a memorial was unveiled on the church map for the 300th birthday of the Querfurt theologian, inventor and natural scientist, created by the Quedlinburg metal artist Jochen Müller.

Carl von Basedow Clinic

It serves as the academic teaching hospital of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .
