Karl August Gottlieb Sturm was born in Querfurt and attended the community school there. In 1818 he started an apprenticeship in organ building in Potsdam without finishing it. When he returned to Querfurt, he began an apprenticeship as a printer (typographer). After completing his training, he went on three hikes. On these trips he came to Copenhagen . In 1830 he began training as a teacher (cantor) at the teachers' college in Weißenfels . After the teacher examination he got his first job in Leimbach near Querfurt. He then worked as a children's teacher in Lobitzsch near Uichteritz and from 1835 as a schoolmaster in Goseck. He held the office until 1871. Sturm died in Goseck in February 1886. His grave is there in the old cemetery.

On the occasion of Sturm's 200th birthday, memorial plaques were placed on his birthplace in Querfurt and on his house in Goseck, and a plane tree was planted in his honor in Querfurt.
