The district of Merseburg-Querfurt was a district in the south of the state of Saxony-Anhalt . On July 1, 2007 it was merged with the Saalkreis to form the new Saalekreis as part of the district reform in Saxony-Anhalt .
Neighboring districts in the north were the district of Mansfelder Land and the Saalkreis as well as the independent city of Halle (Saale) , in the east the Saxon district of Leipziger Land , in the south the districts of Weißenfels and Burgenlandkreis , in the south-west the Thuringian Kyffhäuserkreis and in the west the district of Sangerhausen .

The Saale , the White Elster and the Luppe flowed through the eastern district area . The Saale-Elster-Luppe-Aue was an important resting and breeding area for endangered bird species. The western part of the district was dominated by the agricultural landscape of the Querfurter Platte and the Ziegelroda Forest . The Querne and the Weida flowed into the Mansfeld district on the Querfurt Platte. The Unstrut affected the district of Merseburg-Querfurt in the southwest. The hostage , from which the Geiseltal owes its name, originated in Müuellen (Geiseltal) . The hostage flowed into the Gotthard pond in Merseburg and flowed as Klia on to the Saale. The Laucha flowed from Schafstädt via Bad Lauchstädt in Schkopau into the Saale.
The eastern part of the Merseburg-Querfurt district was part of the Leipzig lowland bay. Here, on the border with the city of Halle (Saale) and the Saalkreis, was the lowest point in the district at 77.8 m above sea level. NN on the Saale . The terrain rose slowly to the west. The highest elevation in the district was 298.6 m above sea level. NN in the local area Landgrafroda , a district of the city of Querfurt .
In the district of Merseburg-Querfurt, five new opencast mining lakes with a total area of approx. 30 km², some of which are still flooded, have been built since 1990. The Geiseltalsee , which has been completely flooded since April 2011, is the largest artificial lake in Germany with an area of 18.42 km².

Transport links
The A 9 (Berlin-Munich) ran in the eastern district with the Leipzig-West / Merseburg and Bad Dürrenberg junctions. In addition, the southern Harz motorway Göttingen-Halle / Leipzig ran in an east-west direction with the junctions Leuna, Merseburg Süd, Merseburg Nord, Bad Lauchstädt, Dreieck Halle-Süd and Schafstadt as well as Querfurt. The federal highways crossing the district were the B 91 (Halle-Merseburg-Weißenfels-Zeitz), B 176 (Weißenfels-Sömmerda), B 180 (Aschersleben-Eisleben-Querfurt-Naumburg), B 181 (Merseburg-Leipzig) and B 250 (Querfurt -Eckartsberga). The most important railway line in the district was the railway line Berlin - Halle - Merseburg - Naumburg - Erfurt - Frankfurt, to which the lines to Merseburg were connected to Müelte-Querfurt and Schafstädt . In addition, there was a rapid transit connection from Merseburg to Halle-Neustadt via Buna-Werke . Closed railway lines were Merseburg – Leipzig , Querfurt – Röblingen and Querfurt – Vitzenburg . There was a commercial airfield in Merseburg . From 1935 until the end of the war, the square was used as a military air base or lead base for the Wehrmacht . Until 1991, the 6th Fighter Division of the Western Group of the CIS Armed Forces (WGT) was stationed. The distance to the international airport Leipzig / Halle was approx. 25 km.
