The district of Köthen was a district in the eastern center of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Neighboring districts in the north were the district of Schönebeck and the district of Anhalt-Zerbst as well as the independent city of Dessau , in the east the district of Bitterfeld , in the south the Saalkreis and in the west the district of Bernburg . The district became part of the newly formed district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld on July 1, 2007 due to a district reform in Saxony-Anhalt .

geography

The district of Köthen was in the Magdeburg Börde in the center of the triangle Magdeburg - Dessau - Halle (Saale) . In the north it bordered the Elbe . The Wulfener Bruch , a wet meadow area with numerous threatened bird species, is located near the Elbe .

history

The Principality of Anhalt-Köthen existed since 1603. Johann Sebastian Bach served here as Kapellmeister for a while . In 1665 it was united with Anhalt-Plötzkau and became a duchy in 1806. In 1847 it was divided between Anhalt-Dessau and Anhalt-Bernburg, and in 1863 Anhalt-Köthen became part of the Duchy of Anhalt . At the same time, the Köthen district was formed from him . After the Duchy of Anhalt became the Free State of Anhalt in 1918, the district of Dessau-Köthen was formed in 1932 from the merger of the districts of Köthen and Dessau . In 1934 the city of Köthen became a district.

After 1945, the Dessau-Köthen district initially belonged to the newly formed Province of Saxony-Anhalt , which in 1947 became the State of Saxony-Anhalt . During the first district reform in the GDR in 1950 , most of the Dessau-Köthen district with the Köthen district and the communities of Aken a./E. , Chörau and Micheln of the district of Calbe and the municipality of Wieskau of the Saalkreis have been combined to form the new district of Köthen.

In 1952 there was a comprehensive administrative reform in the GDR , in which, among other things, the states were dissolved and replaced by districts and a new district structure was created:

Even before the reunification of the two German states, the Köthen district became the Köthen district in 1990. From October 3, 1990 it belonged to the re-established state of Saxony-Anhalt . The district was not affected by the district reform in Saxony-Anhalt in 1994 . Until 2007, the official name was the district of Köthen, although the district town was named Köthen (Anhalt).

During the district reform in 2007 in Saxony-Anhalt, the Köthen district was merged with the Bitterfeld district and parts of the Anhalt-Zerbst district to form the new Anhalt-Bitterfeld district .
