Wulfener Bruch

The Wulfener Bruch is a wet meadow area in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district west of the city of Dessau . Parts of the area are protected by the Wulfener Bruchwiesen nature reserve . The reserve is home to rare animal species and is grazed with rear cattle and horses to preserve the landscape.

The area is located west of the city of Dessau in the old district of Köthen. The area covers over 800 hectares and is part of the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve . The centerpiece is the Wulfener Bruchwiesen nature reserve, which consists of two spatially separated areas that together cover 430 hectares. The landscape is characterized by wet meadows that are interspersed with trees.

Wildlife

The fauna of the wetland includes rare species such as the lapwing and snipe , which also breed in single pairs. Other breeding birds are the brown and stonechat , red kite , black kite , wagtail , skylark , gray bunting and quail . The area also forms the southwestern limit of the distribution of the fire-bellied toad . To preserve the landscape, the area is grazed with Heck cattle. In the meantime, around 50 Heck cattle and a few Przewalski horses live on 80 hectares . In addition, 12 hectares of comparison area are available for the production of winter fodder.
