The Middle Elbe between Mulde and Saale is a nature reserve in the independent city of Dessau-Roßlau , in the city of Aken in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district and in the city of Barby in the Salzland district .

General

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0394 is approximately 8,507  hectares . It largely overlaps with the EU bird sanctuary “Middle Elbe including Steckby-Lödderitzer Forest” and the FFH areas “Kühnauer Heide and Elbaue between Aken and Dessau”. It also includes part of the FFH area “Saale floodplain near Groß Rosenburg” and a small part of the FFH area “Elbaue between the mouth of the Saale and Magdeburg”. The FFH area "Elbaue Steckby-Lödderitz" completely overlaps the nature reserve. The previous nature reserves " Steckby-Lödderitzer Forst " and " Saalberghau " as well as parts of the landscape protection area "Middle Elbe" have merged into the area. The nature reserve is mainly surrounded by the "Middle Elbe" nature reserve. The area has been under nature protection since December 21, 2018. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the city of Dessau-Roßlau and the districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld and Salzlandkreis.

The nature reserve extends along the Elbe and its lowland between Dessau-Roßlau and Barby and includes the mouth of the Saale . The nature reserve is largely located within the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve as part of the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve and includes most of the core area of ​​the major nature conservation project Middle Elbe, which the nature reserve also serves to safeguard.

The area is characterized by soft and hard wood alluvial forests , alder swamp forests as well as predominantly moist, extensively managed grassland complexes, some of which are in the floodplain area of ​​the Elbe, but some are also dense. The dense areas are partially influenced by smoke water . Swamps , reed beds and tall herbaceous vegetation can also be found in damp locations . In addition, grassland areas are as sedges - and rushes rich wet meadows pronounced. In places the grasslands are pronounced as burning cone meadows . In the nature reserve, numerous oxbow lakes with silting zones , flood channels and wet depressions can be found within the floodplain . The alluvial forests are characterized by black alder , common ash , English oak , white elm and field elm .

The areas outside the floodplain are often forested, such as B. the Steckbyer forest as part of the nature reserve. The predominant forest communities outside the floodplain are oak and hornbeam forests . In part, inland dunes , grasslands and heaths how to find the Kühnauer Heath. The forest communities in the nature reserve have a high proportion of old and dead wood .

Three sub-areas have been designated as natural forest cells since mid-November 2017 : The 40.3 hectare natural forest cell "Lödderitz-Goldberger See" in Lödderitz with oak and hornbeam forests in fresh to moist locations and small areas of alder swamp and quarry forests, in which at the time of designation up to Pedunculate oaks that were up to 200 years old were growing, the 45.2 hectare “Lödderitz-Ketzin” natural forest cell in Lödderitz with alder-elm floodplain and damp forests as well as small-area alder swamp and swamp forests, also with very old pedunculate oaks and black poplars , and the 35 , 5 hectare natural forest cell "Olberg" in Aken with alder-elm floodplain and damp forests with pedunculate oaks that are over 200 years old. Around 2323 hectares of the nature reserve are located in the core zones of the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve and, as a total reserve, are left to develop undisturbed.

Flora and fauna

The nature reserve is the habitat of a species-rich, partially endangered flora and fauna . The Elbaue is a habitat for beavers and otters . The forests are the habitat of the wildcat . The nature reserve is home to the pine marten and European polecat species . It is still the habitat of numerous bats . Greater mouse-eared , Big and Small Noctule , Brandt's bat , Brown and Gray long-eared , Serotine , Bechstein's Bat , Pipistrelle , Soprano pipistrelle , Barbastelle , Natterer's bat , Daubenton's bat and pipistrelle bats are native here. Amphibians are by spadefoot , toad , Kreuzkröte , frog , marsh , pond frog , Moorfrosch , frog and newt represented, is also the nature reserve habitat of Rotbauchunke . Reptiles are z. B. represented by the sand lizard . Insects are numerous. Furthermore, the nature reserve is the habitat of various ducks and gulls . A total of around 180 breeding bird species and around 130 guest bird species have been identified in the nature reserve. As a resting and wintering area, the nature reserve is also of great importance for migrating water birds and Limikolen .

In the nature reserve settle numerous plants including Clematis , Waldnabelnüsschen , comb Wachtelweizen , Peucedanum officinale , Wall Felsenblümchen , Gypsophila muralis , Rutenschöterich , sweet grass , High Violet , Shining Meadow Rue , Pyrenees Sumpfkresse , Banat sedge , radicans ledges , sandy silver-lip and Glattbrillenschötchen and Siberian iris , swamp milkweed , water chestnut and crab claws .
