The Keilfleck-Mosaikjungfer or also Keilflecklibelle ( Aeshna isoceles ) is a type of dragonfly from the family of the noble dragonflies (Aeshnidae), which belong to the suborder of the large dragonflies (Anisoptera). It is widespread from North Africa through South, Central and Eastern Europe to Turkey. The island of Gotland is considered the northernmost point of discovery . The species is rare and endangered in Germany.

features

The wedge-shaped mosaic maiden reaches wingspans of 8.5 to 9.5 centimeters. The entire body of the wedge-shaped damsel has an orange-brown base tone and, in the male, a fine greenish mark. In contrast to the similarly colored brown mosaic maiden ( Aeshna grandis ) with brown wings, the wings are crystal clear. The wedge-shaped damsel also bears a wedge-shaped drawing on the back of the second abdomen section, from which it owes its name. Their green complex eyes, which contrast with the otherwise light brown body color, are also striking.

Way of life

The adults of the species can be found in Central Europe quite early from mid-May to early August in the reed area of standing and slowly flowing waters of the flatlands. They are very warmth-loving, the males often stay in reed bays on the water-facing side of the plants. Compared to other species, they fly little and take long periods of rest.

The females seek the water to mate and lay their eggs. The mating begins above the water and ends in the branches of the bank trees. The females pierce their eggs into floating parts of the plant.

The larvae hatch around six weeks after they have laid their eggs in the same year. Depending on the environmental conditions, their development takes a year or two.

Systematics and nomenclature

Some authors add the wedge- blotch damsel to the Asian dragonfly genus Anaciaeschna , but this assignment is very controversial.

The spelling " isosceles " for the scientific species name, which has been used in the literature for many decades, is incorrect according to the rules in force before 2000, since the original description of the species says " Libellula Isoceles " (without s). After 1999, a decision regarding the correctness of the name that is valid at a certain point in time can only be made based on a new regulation in the 4th edition of the ICZN Code (Articles 33.2.3.1 and 33.3.1) if it has been determined which spelling is currently used is in predominant use.
