Mosaic maidens ( Aeshna ) are a genus of the Edellibelle family (Aeshnidae).
features
The mosaic maidens are large dragonflies with wingspans between 8 and 11 cm. The chest section ( thorax ) is as well as the abdomen ( abdomen ) strongly pronounced. Both are usually brown to gray-brown in color. The thorax has blue or yellow stripes or spots on it. The abdomen is drawn with yellow, blue or green segmental dots.
Males and females differ only slightly in shape and size: the abdomen of the males is, however, at the level of the second segment, clearly and more strongly waisted than that of the females. The males usually appear a bit slimmer overall. The appendices of both sexes also differ.
