The Buchholz is a nature reserve in the independent city of Dessau-Roßlau in Saxony-Anhalt .
The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0094 is 40.24 hectares . It is part of the FFH area "Rossel, Buchholz and Streetzer Busch north of Roßlau" and surrounded by the landscape protection area "Roßlauer Vorfläming". The area has been under protection since May 1, 1961 (date of regulation: March 30, 1961). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the city of Dessau-Roßlau.
The nature reserve is located northeast of Roßlau between Mühlstedt and Thießen in the Fläming Nature Park . It protects a section of the Rossel and the adjacent valley to the northwest. On its north-western bank, the Rossel is accompanied by wet meadows with shrubby vegetation . In addition, you can find quarry forests in the form of sedge-alder forest with long-lasting sedge , swamp sedge and false cypergrass harrow and black cherry-alder-ash forest with real meadowsweet , forest star chickweed , Märzenbecher and lawn curmuds . On slightly higher areas, on nutrient-rich locations, oak-hornbeam forests with scaled root and chickweed grow, which, on nutrient-poor locations , merges into an oak-birch forest with downy birch , buckthorn , pipe grass and German honeysuckle . In addition, non-native trees such as pine , spruce , red oak and red beech grow here .
The Rossel is the habitat of brook lamprey , brook loach and brook trout . The forests provide a habitat for numerous birds. Special features are the gray wagtail and the common owl that occur in the area of the Rossel.
The nature reserve is bordered to the west by the railway line Wiesenburg-Roßlau and in the northwest on a farm track . Mainly agricultural areas adjoin the protected area . Two agriculturally used areas on the edge of the Buchholz are included in the nature reserve.
