The Steckby-Lödderitzer Forest is a former nature reserve in the towns of Aken (Elbe) and Zerbst / Anhalt in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district and Barby in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt .

The former nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0036 is around 3820  hectares in size. It was mostly part of the bird sanctuary "Middle Elbe including Steckby-Lödderitzer Forest", partly also the FFH area "Elbaue Steckby-Lödderitz" and surrounded by the landscape protection areas "Middle Elbe" and "Middle Elbe-Steckby". A total of 710 hectares are designated as core zones of the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve and are reserved for natural development. The area has been under protection since early 2004 (date of regulation: December 23, 2003). It replaced the area of ​​the same name, originally designated on May 1, 1961. Parts of the forest were already under protection before 1961, for the first time in 1929: Here is the nucleus of today's Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve, which was recognized on November 24, 1979 as the "Steckby-Lödderitzer Forest" biosphere reserve. On December 21, 2018, the area became part of the newly designated nature reserve " Middle Elbe between Mulde and Saale ".

Natural spaces

The former nature reserve is located northwest of Aken (Elbe) in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve. It extends in the Stromtalaue of the Elbe to below the mouth of the Saale in the Elbe and includes parts of the adjacent valley sand terraces .

On the left side of the Elbe between Aken (Elbe) and Breitenhagen is the Lödderitzer Forest, a hardwood alluvial forest with oxbow lakes and still waters; it was cut off to a large extent from the natural river dynamics until the dike was relocated . In the north of the protected area between Breitenhagen and Barby is the area where the Saale flows into the Elbe with numerous side arms and oxbow lakes.

On the right-hand side of the Elbe there are widespread dunes following the lowland, many of which are forested. Besides are sandy dry grasslands and neglected grassland in the formations silver grass pioneer grass, bentgrass neglected grassland, ear spoon Campion-dry grasslands and heath cloves to find -Strandnelken lawn. Settle on the lawns and a. Smooth Brillenschötchen , sand silver-lip , sand cinquefoil and wall Felsenblümchen .

As another meadow communities are foxtail meadows, Quecken- flood lawn , alternating wet Cnidium - Silgen meadows and alternately dry Meadowsweet - Buttercup meadows in the former nature reserve to find.

Flora and fauna

The different habitat types in the former nature reserve offer numerous endangered species habitat, including Siberian iris , Small meadowsweet, Vielblütiger Buttercup, Peucedanum officinale , Nordic bedstraw , dyer Charter , silaum silaus , selinum carvifolia , Lathyrus palustris and Inula salicina . In the still waters of the bayous and flood channels settle various pondweed - Naiad - epidermis - and milfoil -Teichrosengesellschaften. Furthermore, z. B. Multi-rooted pond lentil , common swimming fern , crayfish claws and common water hose can be found.

The former nature reserve has a rich fauna. More than 100 breeding bird species have been identified, including rare species such as the black stork and crane , which use the floodplain forests as a habitat, and the bittern , which finds a suitable habitat in the reed beds. Furthermore, the former nature reserve is an important resting and wintering area for migrating bird species . In the past there were also occurrences of the lesser spotted eagle in the Steckby-Lödderitz forest , which has been recorded as a breeding bird in the areas along the Elbe since 1965. However, the occurrence has been extinct since 2012 at the latest.

The water areas are habitat for mud whip , bitterling , bullhead and other fish species . The Elbe beaver is also native to the former nature reserve. The ditches and ponds of the plateau provide a habitat for the pond turtle . Various amphibians , including crested newts and pond newts , red-bellied toad , tree frogs and sea ​​frogs also live here.

After all, the former nature reserve is the habitat of a species-rich insect fauna . Around 150 butterfly species have been identified here. Furthermore, longhorn beetles - including the Great Capricorn Beetle , and ground beetles as much at home as the stag beetle . There are also numerous dragonflies , including the Asiatic maidenhead , southern mermaid , green mermaid and great moss maiden, as well as locusts , including the striped shrimp .

Relocation of the dike in the Lödderitz Forest area

As part of the major nature conservation project Middle Elbe, the Elbe dike in the Lödderitz Forest was relocated over a length of over seven kilometers and the alluvial forest was renatured on an area of ​​around 600 hectares by subjecting it again to the natural flow dynamics. At the same time, a new floodplain is being created that can absorb floods from the Elbe and thus serve to improve flood protection. Work on relocating the dike began in October 2009 and was completed in 2017.
