Elbe flood 2013

At Breitenhagen, the dam broke in June 2013 about 150 m behind the pumping station over a length of about 100 m. As a result, the flood penetrated to Aken . An area about the size of Lake Constance was flooded and the amount of water was equal to the capacity of the Rappbodetalsperre . The places Breitenhagen, Klein Rosenburg , Groß Rosenburg , Lödderitz , Rajoch , Kühren , Diebzig , Susigke and parts of Sachsendorf and Aken were badly hit. Some residents could only return to their uninhabitable houses after 3 weeks. In July 2013, the THW tried to enlarge the fracture point in order to relieve the flooded areas and to channel the water back into the Elbe. This could only be achieved by using an excavator.

history

The place Breitenhagen is over 750 years old. An altar plate in the village church of St. Christophoros, which is over a thousand years old, probably comes from the Sorbian Orthodox Church of the early 10th century, which was also used after the violent Catholicization of the Serimunt district from 927.

The village church of St. Christophorus was built from rubble stones in 1625 and was given its present form in 1725.

Until 1914 there was a shipyard in Breitenhagen where Elbe barges were built. The last of its kind, the Marie-Gerda , is now a ship restaurant on the banks of the Elbe.

On January 1, 2010, the previously independent communities of Breitenhagen, Glinde , Groß Rosenburg , Lödderitz , Pömmelte , Sachsendorf , Tornitz , Wespen and Zuchau and the city of Barby (Elbe) merged to form the new city of Barby. At the same time, the Elbe-Saale administrative community , to which Breitenhagen belonged, was dissolved.
