The caraway-leaved Silge ( Selinum carvifolia ), also simply called Silge , is a plant species within the Umbelliferae family (Apiaceae). It is common in Eurasia .

Description and phenology

Illustration from Flora Batava ... , Volume 9

The caraway-leaved Silge grows as a deciduous, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches a height of around 30 to 100 centimeters. The sharp-edged, furrowed stem is slender, sparsely branched and distantly leafed. The lower leaves are triple pinnate, the last-order sections are deeply pinnately incised, the leaf lobes with a width of about 1 millimeter are elongated to linear and prickly.

The flowering period extends from July and August, occasionally until September. The double-gold inflorescence is 15 to 20-rayed, looks stocky and is slightly arched. The envelope is missing or there are one to two bracts. The ruler-awl bracts are numerous. The flowers are five-fold. The petals are white to pink in color.

The double achane is roundish-elliptical, flattened and finally ten-winged at a height of about 3 millimeters. Fruit ripening is from August to October.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 22.

ecology

The caraway-leaved Silge is a hemicryptophyte and a half-rosette plant.

The flower ecology is about "nectar-bearing disc flowers" with male and hermaphrodite (then pre-male) flowers. The pollination is carried out by Fly and beetles .

The diaspores are the double achenes; they are spread as wind spreaders and wing fliers, and random spread by grazing animals also occurs.

Occurrence

The caraway-leaved silge is a Eurasian-suboceanic flora element . It occurs in northern , central and less often in southern Europe. To the east it penetrates to Siberia . In Austria it occurs sparsely or rarely and is endangered in many places. In Switzerland it is generally found scattered. The caraway-leaved silge occurs in Central Europe scattered or rarely. Selinum carvifolia occurs scattered in central and southern Germany and rarely occurs in northern Germany . Selinum carvifolia is a neophyte in North America .

Selinum carvifolia grows in wet meadows , floodplain bushes and light forest communities . It is a character species of the order Molinietalia in Central Europe, but also occurs in socially humid societies of the Carpinion or Quercion roboris associations. It thrives best on alternately moist, mostly lime-poor , clayey soils or peat soils.

Differentiation to similar species

It differs from the common meadow silage ( Silaum silaus ) by its white or reddish flowers. The flowers of the common meadow silt are yellowish and never white.

Subspecies

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Selinum carvifolia subsp. carvifolia : It occurs in Europe in France, Germany, Great Britain, Austria, Liechtenstein, the Czech Republic, Italy, Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine.
  • Selinum carvifolia subsp. broteri (Hoffmanns. & Link) Laínz : It occurs only in Portugal, Spain and France.
