Dead English oaks in the NSG Steinhorste

The Steinhorste is a nature reserve in the town of Raguhn-Jeßnitz in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0187 is around 39  hectares in size. It is largely part of the FFH area "Taube-Quellen und Auengebiet bei Möst" and surrounded by the landscape protection area "Middle Elbe". To the west it borders on the “ Möster Birken ” nature reserve . The area has been under protection since 1999 (date of regulation: May 28, 1999). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld.

The nature reserve is located south of Dessau-Roßlau in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve . It protects a poorly muddy low area of the pigeon . This is characterized in the south by wet meadows that merge to the north in Großseggenriede with numerous alders as remnants of former alder forests . In the outskirts of the protected area there are forest communities with hornbeams and hardwood alluvial forests characterized by ash and elm trees . Areas that are temporarily filled with water are taken over by flood turf dominated by flood plumes.

Large areas of the nature reserve are influenced by dams created by beavers , through which the meadows are flooded. The nature reserve is an important habitat for amphibians . So here are tree frog , toad , spadefoot , toad and crested newt home.

In the north the nature reserve borders on the federal highway 9 , in the east it is bounded by the county road between Dessau and Schierau.
