description

The nature reserve is located northeast of Bitterfeld in the Dübener Heide nature park . It provides a north of the depression reservoir lying wetland in the area of former open pit Muldenstein on the edge of Dübener Heide under protection. After the end of lignite mining, the area was recultivated and filled for subsequent agricultural use. Due to the rise in the groundwater, the areas became wet, so that agricultural use had to be given up.

The area is characterized by extensive reed beds , which are followed by rush-rich and reed- interspersed riding grass meadows. The broad-leaved cattail also grows in the reed zones . There are also a few open shallow water areas. Large parts of the protected area are covered with bushes due to the growth of willows and birches, which are now partially dying off as a result of the rise in groundwater.

The former open-cast mine is bordered to the north and east by an embankment up to 15 meters high. In the course of the renovation as a post-mining landscape, the embankment areas were mostly reforested with locust trees and poplars, some of which are to be removed as woody trees that are not typical of the site.

The wetland is an important habitat for many marsh and water birds as well as on reed zones kept deliberately species of birds including bittern , water rail , marsh harriers , great gray shrike , Teichrohr- and Reed Warbler , Barred Warbler , Whinchat and Beutelmeise . After a nesting aid was set up in 1995, the osprey also made its home. The area will u. a. visited by hawk , sparrowhawk , tree falcon and kingfisher for foraging. The area is also home to numerous dragonflies .

The nature trailPost-Mining Landscape Muldestausee” runs along the southern edge of the nature reserve. There is an observation point on the nature trail from which the osprey nest can be observed.
