The Neolith-Teich is a nature reserve in the town of Aken (Elbe) and the municipality of Osternienburger Land in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0088 is around 107  hectares . It is part of the bird sanctuary "Wulfener Bruch and pond area Osternienburg" and partially surrounded by the landscape conservation area "Middle Elbe". The area has been under protection since 2003 (date of regulation: December 15, 2003). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld.

The nature reserve is located north of Köthen and southwest of Aken (Elbe) in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve . It puts the Neolith pond and the adjacent areas under protection. The damming-regulated pond was created by lowering the terrain in a former lignite mining area . The pond, which is a maximum of two meters deep, is primarily fed by the ditch and drained towards the Saale . The Neolith pond has a high salt content of 2400 to 4500 mg / l due to wastewater discharges into the ditch.

The bank areas of the pond are lined with broad reeds , on the water-side edges of which have formed stocks of narrow-leaved cattails . On meadows on the edge of the pond settle halophytes , including salt Bunge , Kahle reporting , beach reporting and Suaeda maritima and salt-tolerant species such as strawberry clover , Red tooth consolation and Centaurium erythraea . Sand peaks are occupied by beach carnation corridors. In addition, in the nature reserve there are poplar and pine forests, wood stocks from non-native species as well as arable land and intensively used grassland . The forests and woodland are to be developed into near-natural stands. Extensification of the use is planned for the agricultural areas.

The nature reserve is a habitat for a rich avifauna . Up to 85 different species of birds were observed, of which 20 also breed here, including pochard , teal , shoveler , great crested grebe , red-necked grebe , little grebe , bittern , little bittern , marsh harrier , reed warbler , reed warbler , sedge warbler , reed bunting and Beutelmeise . The area is also of great importance as a resting area for Nordic geese . Up to 40,000 bean geese and white-fronted geese rest and spend the night here between September and December , of which up to 5,000 animals hibernate in mild winters. Other goose species that rest here include: a. Short-billed goose , little goose , Canada goose , barnacle goose , brent goose and red-necked goose .

In the north-west of the pond there is an observation platform from which the pond can be viewed. The Neolith pond is used for fishing in the summer months (July 15 to September 30).

The nature reserve borders the Köthen – Aken railway line to the east . Otherwise it is mostly limited by public roads. To the north, across the road, there is a weekend house area and a campsite at the acacia pond, and to the south, a factory site adjoins the nature reserve.
