The Saalberghau is a former nature reserve in the independent city of Dessau-Roßlau in Saxony-Anhalt .

The former nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0090 is around 316  hectares . It was part of the FFH area "Kühnauer Heide and Elbaue between Aken and Dessau" and the EU bird sanctuary "Middle Elbe including Steckby-Lödderitzer Forest" and almost completely surrounded by the landscape protection area "Middle Elbe". The area has been under protection since 2003 (date of regulation: December 15, 2003). Parts of the area had already been placed under protection in 1926. On December 21, 2018, the newly designated nature reserve " Middle Elbe between Mulde and Saale " opened. The responsible lower nature conservation authority was the city of Dessau-Roßlau.

The former nature reserve, which consists of two parts, is located northwest of Dessau in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve and in the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm . It comprises a section of the Elbe with its floodplain and the eastern part of the Kühnauer See with bank areas and the fishing island. The two partial areas met near the sewage treatment plant in the Ziebigk district of the city of Dessau-Roßlau.

The floodplain of the Elbe is characterized by hardwood floodplain forest , floodplain meadows, oxbow lakes and flood channels. This is followed by larger dune complexes with dry grass . The alluvial forests occur in the hornbeam, linden and cane grass formation. The herbaceous layer is from Haller shear cress and species-rich spring geophytenbeständen with spring snowflake and Zweiblättrigem Bluestar dominated. In the floodplain meadows, there are species-rich arboreal meadows as well as multi-flowered buttercups, angular leeks , Siberian irises , meadow silts , large meadow buttons and willow-leaved elephants . There are also foxtail meadows, couch grass floodplains as well as kinky foxtail and ostrich grass floodplains. Backwaters and flood channels are taken up by reed beds and sedge beds as well as aquatic plant communities. Here are u. a. Water hazel , floating fern and small mermaid can be found. Furthermore, in damp locations u. a. Rasensegge , God hyssop , Spießblättriges skullcap , Inula salicina, meadow Iris and gloss Wiesenraute to find. The river banks of the Elbe with its groyne fields are inhabited by mud corridors, Bidens corridors and hallways veil to which Weichholzaue followed. The alluvial forest areas in the nature reserve have a high proportion of dead wood .

Open areas on dune areas are dry lawn with Ohrlöffelleimkraut , Pyrenees Sumpfkresse , Brillenschötchen , golden hair Aster , lying speedwell and handsome orchid and silver grass and Straußgräserern taken.

The former nature reserve is the habitat of beavers and otters . The avifauna is u. a. by means woodpecker , nuthatch , forest and Treecreeper , Golden Oriole and Barred Warbler and Red Kite represented. The Kühnauer See is u. a. The habitat of the wolffish , mud whip and bitterling . Amphibians are u in the nature reserve. a. by fire-bellied toad and tree frog , insects by dragonflies as Southern Hawker and Asian Clubtail and grasshoppers as Striped Zartschrecke represented.
