The alluvial forest near Plötzkau is a nature reserve in the municipality of Plötzkau in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt .
The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0082 is around 131 hectares in size. It is almost completely part of the bird sanctuary "Auenwald Plötzkau" and the FFH area "Auenwälder bei Plötzkau" and is surrounded by the Saale landscape protection area. The area has been under protection since May 1, 1961 (date of regulation: March 30, 1961) and was expanded in 1983. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Salzlandkreis.
The nature reserve is located southwest of Bernburg (Saale) in the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park . It protects an alluvial forest with silting oxbow lakes , ditches and brooks, damp depressions and small meadows under protection. The alluvial forest is characterized by elms and ash trees as well as individual English oaks . The herbaceous layer forming spring flowering bulbs such Hollow Corydalis , celandine , forest yellow star and Yellow Anemone and later in tall herbs and grasses. The silting oxbow lakes are shaped by floating leaf plants and reed beds .
Since 1963 the alluvial forest has housed a colony of gray herons with at times up to 140 breeding pairs. The gray heron population declined in the late 1990s and the colony became completely extinct in 2003. In addition, numerous birds of prey are native here, including red and black kites , goshawks , wasp and common buzzards . The nature reserve is also a habitat for other breeding birds , e.g. B. Dove , middle spotted woodpecker , kingfisher , Hood and Little Grebe and Common Pochard .
A short section of the Saale cycle path runs through the nature reserve or along its edge.
