The Saale flows into the Elbe

The Saale Cycle Path runs over 403 kilometers along the Saale from the source at the Großer Waldstein to the confluence with the Elbe at Barby . It touches the federal states of Bavaria ( Fichtelgebirge , Franconian Forest ), Thuringia ( Thuringian Slate Mountains , Saaleland) and Saxony-Anhalt and is considered to be one of the most demanding river cycle routes in Germany. In its upper reaches it is characterized by many climbs. In the area of the Saale dams ( Saale cascade : Bleilochtalsperre , Burgkhammer dam , Walsburg , Hohenwartet dam and Eichicht dam ), cycling close to the water is often impossible. From Saalfeld / Saale , the cycle path is also easily accessible for families with children. The connecting cycle path in the north is the Elbe cycle path .

The Saale Cycle Path is part of the D-Route 11 Baltic Sea – Upper Bavaria and, especially on the last few kilometers before the mouth of the Saale into the Elbe, it is part of the European cycle path R1 and part of EuroVelo 2 .
