Walsburg is a district of the municipality of Eßbach in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .

geography

The district of Walsburg is located west of Eßbach and Dörflas an der Saale in the valley. The Walsburg reservoir is part of the Wisenta pumped storage plant . The Wisenta flows into the Saale from the east nearby . The slopes and hills are wooded. A local connecting road runs between Eßbach-Walsburg and Liebschütz with a connection to the state road 1103 in Eßbach.

history

The hamlet was first mentioned on March 31, 1289 . Slight remains of the wall on the mountain spur above the right bank of the Saale between Eßbach and Walsburg point to the former Walsburg fortification . At that time it served to protect and help with the Saale crossing traffic between the Orlasenke with Arnshaugk and Bad Lobenstein . The castle was probably built by the Lobdeburgers, because in 1323 it came into the possession of the Schwarzburger and was abandoned in the 15th century. There was already a hammer mill in the shelter of this castle. Walsburg belonged to the Electoral Saxon Office of Ziegenrück until 1815 and after its assignment, decided at the Congress of Vienna , came to the Prussian district of Ziegenrück , to which the place belonged until 1945.

Walsburg has been part of the Eßbach community since 1967. The hamlet was used for recreational purposes until around 1991.
