The Wisenta is an approximately 55 km long, right and eastern tributary of the Saale in the Saale-Orla district and Vogtland district in Thuringia and Saxony , Germany .

Origin of name

The name Wisenta goes back to the wisent , which could have lived in the area around Schleiz in the 11th century . It means something like bison water or river on which bison live (connection of the mhd. Wisent with the basic word aha for water or river ).

The oldest written mention goes back to the year 1071 with the spelling wisinta . The name 1122 can be found in the same spelling in the border description of the Dobnagau . In 1280 it is written in the wisenta documents . In the late Middle Ages the name was reinterpreted in terms of folk etymology as Wisentthal or Wiesenthal . The latter name was the official name of the river until the early 20th century. It was not until 1929 that it got its original name back, Wisenta . It should be noted that the term Wisentaland for the area through which the Wisenta flows was retained even during the time when the Wiesenthal River was hot. For the year 1232 it is known that the grain measure Scheffel in the area around Schleiz was called essential .

course

The Wisenta rises around 2 km west of the village of Rothenacker , which belongs to the small town of Tanna in Thuringia . Its source is located on the eastern flank of the wooded mountain Rosenbühl ( 653.3  m above sea  level ) at an altitude of about 605  m .

First the Wisenta flows to the northeast between the villages of Rothenacker in the south-south-east and Willersdorf in the north-north-west. In doing so, she passes the Zeidelbrunnen (approx.  565  m ) and the Ottenmühle (approx.  535  m ), which is located on the  308 district road that connects the two villages . Then the small Schwarzbach flows from the south. Then it runs northwards in each case directly east to Oberkoskau , where it passes the Mittelmühle (approx.  507  m ), and past Unterkoskau , where the small Lohbach flows into and passes  the Schlagmühle (approx. 502  m ) on Landesstrasse 1089  . A little below Unterkoskau, where a 17 m long bridge of the crossing Schönberg – Hirschberg railway runs over it, the small Forstbach ( 492.1  m ) joins from the west .

A little further north, the Wisenta flows through the small Saxon town of Mühltroff , where it first flows into the small Königsbach and is then bridged by the federal road 282 . The small Langenbacher Bach (approx.  476  m ) joins there . Directly below the village, it is bridged by a 16 m long bridge of the railway line Schönberg – Schleiz ( Wisentatalbahn ) which from now on accompanies the river . Then it passes the Lippoldsmühle , then the Zeitera flows towards it coming from the southwest .

After that, the Wisenta, now running again to its mouth in Thuringia, turns north-north-west to Langenbuch , an east-south-east part of the small town of Schleiz , where the forest houses are near the river. Shortly afterwards it flows through the Lössau dam ( 453.8  m ; 34 ha); From the northern end of the reservoir, water can be drained over the wisent tunnel towards the northeast or Weckersdorf into the small forest stream that flows into the Weida . Below the dam passes the Wisenta now running westward, belonging to the district Schleiz Lössau . After passing Heuschkelshof, the Schmidtenmühle and the Burkhartsmühle, it passes the Schleiz district of Wüstendittersdorf, a little above the river, with the Feldschlösschen, where it is bridged by the Bundesstraße 94 . It then flows past the wood mill (approx.  430  m ) and the weir pond, which is fed by a separate pipe. Then it runs through the center of Schleiz, where it crosses under the federal highway 2 at a height of about 425  m and where the railway line Schönberg – Schleiz that accompanies the river ends. Shortly afterwards, the wisenta passes the pepper mill. Below Schleiz, it flows increasingly winding past the Glücksmühle, after which the Schlangenbach flows from the north . A little later the river is bridged by the 108 m long bison bridge of the federal highway 9 , under which, coming from the southeast, the small Culmbach flows. The Wisenta then flows past the Beyersmühle, which is fed by a separate mill ditch, and then through the Schleiz village of Möschlitz , where state road 2357 crosses. Then she passes the Stöckigtsmühle and the Schleizer district of Grochwitz .

The Wisenta then continues to flow westward through the Wisenta dam ( 389  m ; 28 ha), which lies on the border between Schleiz and the municipality of Crispendorf and where the Wisenta pumped storage plant is located. Below the reservoir, the small Erkmannsdorfer Bach flows in from the north, after which it passes the Schachenfelsen, north of the Crispendorfer village of Dörflas .

A few bends in the river below these rocks, the Wisenta flows from the east near Walsburg , a district of the municipality of Eßbach , at a height of around 320  m into the Saale, which comes from there from the southeast .
