Unterkoskau is a district of the town of Tanna in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .

Geography and geology

4 km east of Tanna on the Wisenta river near the Saxon and Bavarian borders lies Unterkoskau with the incorporated village of Oberkoskau 2 km south. The districts of both villages belong to the southeast Thuringian slate mountains. These locations have a high proportion of fine soil and humus content and are very fertile, especially under the existing climatic conditions. The Koskauer have good transport links to the federal autobahn 9 and 173 via the federal roads 2 and 282 and the L 1089 . Furthermore, Unterkoskau is on the Schönberg – Hirschberg railway line . However, there are no longer any passenger trains.

Neighboring towns are Tanna to the west, Willersdorf to the south, Stelzen to the east and Kornbach to the north.

history

Lower Koskau was a Sorbian settlement. The first documentary mention of Unterkoskau comes from August 14, 1325, of Oberkoskau from August 24, 1325. Unterkoskau has 300 inhabitants and is characterized by agriculture.

The church was rebuilt in 1606 after a fire.

On January 1, 1997, Unterkoskau and Oberkoskau were incorporated into Tanna.
