geography

Location and geology

The village of Stelzen is located on a gently sloping western slope of the Stelzenhöhe on the Thuringian-Saxon border. The incorporated hamlet of Spielmes is 2 km away in the Schwarzbachtal. The districts of both places are part of the southeast Thuringian slate mountains . The road (L 1089) through stilts connects the Saxon part of the Vogtland with the Thuringian. The height of the stilts allows a wide view of the Thuringian and Saxon Vogtland.

Neighboring places

Neighboring towns are Reuth in Saxony to the south, Rothenacker further south and Oberkoskau to the west .

history

Namesake of the place Stelzen

Stilts were first mentioned on August 31, 1279, and Spielmes on December 1, 1437. 370 inhabitants live in stilts, although it is unclear whether the 60 inhabitants of Spielmes are included. Stilts and Spielmes have always been closely connected. This applies particularly to the church and the school. The places were farming villages and have raised concerns about the development of agriculture then and now. Until 1928, Stelzen was divided into a Russian (Thuringian) and a Saxon part. The Saxon part was under the manorial rule of the manor Leubnitz in the electoral or royal Saxon office of Plauen until 1856 . In 1856, Stelzen (Saxon Ant.) Was incorporated into the Plauen Court Office and in 1875 the Plauen District Administration . In 1928 there was an exchange of territory and a border adjustment between the Free State of Saxony and the State of Thuringia. As a result, the parcels of stilts belonging to Reuth of Saxony were completely ceded to Thuringia and combined with the Thuringian share of stilts.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent municipality of Spielmes was incorporated. As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , the municipality of Stelzen came to the Schleiz district in the Gera district in 1952 , which was continued in 1990 as the Schleiz district in Thuringia and was merged into the Saale-Orla district in 1994.

From 1991 to 1997 Stelzen was part of the Gefell administrative community . On January 1, 1997, the community of Stelzen was incorporated into Tanna.

The annual stilt festival has been a highlight of the year not only for stilts since 1993.
