Ernst Puchmüller

Ernst Puchmüller (born March 7, 1897 in Dassow ; † June 14, 1976 in Rostock ) was a German baker , resistance fighter against National Socialism , first secretary of an SED district leadership , VVN state chairman in Mecklenburg and director of a state institution for the blind .

Life

Ernst Puchmüller came from a family of craftsmen . His father was a shoemaker . After attending primary school, he learned to be a baker. During the First World War he was called up for military service in 1916 and on May 4, 1917 lost 75 percent of his eyesight on the Western Front due to a war injury . Returned from the Army, he was in Dassow rural postman . In 1917 he joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), and in 1918 he joined the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany (USPD) and belonged to its left wing. When it was dissolved, he joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). He went to Lübeck and headed the Red Aid (RH) there. In 1932 he was elected to the Lübeck citizenship with the mandate of the KPD .

After the transfer of power to the NSDAP , he continued his anti-fascist work illegally . On 13 October 1935 he was ver liable , and on 12 December 1936 sentenced him court in the so-called " Lübeck Communists process " to 13 years in prison . He avoided the death penalty because of his blindness .

When the Nazi rule was eliminated, he took part in the re-establishment of the KPD and belonged to its board of directors and to the board of the later SED in the Grevesmühlen district . He became chairman or secretary of the SED district leadership in Schönberg. In February 1947 he became the chairman of the preparatory committee of the Association of Victims of the Nazi Regime (VVN) in the state of Mecklenburg. In November 1948 he was appointed director of the state institution for the blind and the rehabilitation center for the blind in Neukloster . In 1953/54 he was replaced by Helmut Pielasch . He was then again director of the institution for the blind until 1967. From May 1957 to 1963 he was vice-president of the General German Association of the Blind in the GDR .

He passed on his experiences from resistance and persecution in discussions with contemporary witnesses and through his own publications. Puchmüller last lived as a veteran in Rostock.
