The Lössau dam is located near Schleiz in Thuringia near the Saxon border and is part of the Lössau- Zeulenroda - Weida dam system . It was put into operation in 1985 and is operated by the Thuringian long-distance water supply . Its purpose is drinking water supply, which is realized by a transfer in a 2.3 km long tunnel to Weida, low water elevation and flood protection.

Dam system

The catchment area of the Lössau-Zeulenroda-Weida dam system is located in the Thuringian Slate Mountains south of Gera . The water of the Lössau dam flows over the Wisenta into the Saale and over the tunnel to the Weida . The water from the Zeulenroda dam flows into the Weida dam, and from there over the Weida into the White Elster .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a stone embankment dam with an inclined interior clay seal and is founded on the Diabase Mountains. The inner seal consists of slope loam , the stone fill of the support body is made of gravel slate , and the water side is covered with granite gravel. An injection under the hearth trench and from the berm serves as a seal to the impermeable subsurface . In the middle of the dam there is a combined relief and extraction structure.
