A holiday settlement with Finnhütten on the opposite side of the lake is also part of Saaldorf.

history

The first documentary mention of Saaldorf dates back to 1689. However, small ironworks and associated settlements were built on the Saale as early as the Middle Ages . The names of the towns of Spaniershammer and Neuhammer, which were lost when the Saale was jammed, still remind of this.

The Waidmannsheil hunting lodge around 1907

The wooded area around Saaldorf was used by the lords of the Reuss Princely House as a hunting ground. They also built a large game enclosure . From 1834 to 1837 the Reuss-Ebersdorf prince Heinrich LXXII. Built by the Gotha court architect Gustav von Eberhard (1805–1880) in Saaldorf, the “ Jagdschloss Waidmannsheil ” in neo-Gothic style, which also served as a second residence. The dancer Lola Montez , who was the Prince's guest in 1843 , also stayed here . The hunting lodge was expropriated by the Russian military government after the Second World War , but is now owned by the princely Reuss family again and is used by a construction consultancy and support company.

Because of the damming up of the Saale due to the construction of the lead-hole dam in the years 1926 to 1932, more than half of the inhabitants of Saaldorf at that time - that was over 300 - had to leave their flood-exposed properties and move to newly built houses higher up.

During the GDR era , the LPG “Oberland” Lobenstein ran cattle farming on the pastures around Saaldorf, mainly with young cattle.

In 1962 Saaldorf was incorporated into Lobenstein.

Today the economic focus of Saaldorf as a district of Bad Lobenstein is mainly in the field of tourism .
