Birkenhügel was created on February 28, 1923 through the merger of the towns of Lerchenhügel and Pirk . Until 1918 the area of ​​the community belonged to the Principality of Reuss younger line .

Since June 18, 1994, the municipality of Birkenhügel belonged to the Saale-Rennsteig administrative community .
