Pottiga is a district of the municipality of Rosenthal am Rennsteig in the south of the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .

Geography and geology

The place Pottiga lies on a southern slope towards the Saale . In the center there is a market place. Several ponds are spread around the place. The district with 759 hectares lies on a slope around the village that slopes towards the Saale. This plateau is part of the Southeast Thuringian Slate Mountains, which confirms the properties of the soil. On the northwestern flank of the district, the forest begins up to the hills. The state road 1093 branches off from the federal road 90 at Frössen and leads through Pottiga to Blankenberg.

Adjacent villages are Birkenhügel , Blankenberg , Harra and the town of Hirschberg in the Saale-Orla district and Berg and Issigau in the Bavarian district of Hof .

history

Pottiga was first mentioned in a document on August 14, 1325.

Until 1918 Pottiga belonged to the Principality of Reuss Younger Line . During the time of the division of Germany , Pottiga was right on the border with the Federal Republic. The border ran through the Saale in the area of Pottiga . In the Saale section between Blankenstein and Pottiga there were several spectacular escape attempts. Because Pottiga was within the border strip, the place was only accessible with a special permit.

The place has always been shaped by agriculture and forestry. Mining used to be an important source of income. Tourism was and is maintained.

On January 1, 2019, the communities of Pottiga, Blankenberg , Blankenstein , Harra , Neundorf , Birkenhügel and Schlegel merged to form the community of Rosenthal am Rennsteig . All the municipalities of this municipality merger had belonged to the Saale-Rennsteig administrative community since 1994 .

Market festival

The Pottigaer market festival has a long tradition. The Pottiga market has been held since 1856 . Dates were in spring for the fair and in autumn. This later became the annual autumn market.

Since then, the third weekend in September has established itself as a fixed date, with the market on Sunday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Due to the location in the restricted area of the former GDR and the associated difficulties in entering the country for dealers and visitors, a new edition was only published in 1986. In 2006 the Pottigaer Marktfest celebrated its 150th anniversary.
