As part of the Principality of Bayreuth , Berg belonged to the Franconian Empire from 1500 . Berg fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1810 . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

On January 1, 1978, the previously independent community of Gottsmannsgrün was incorporated. On May 1, 1978, Bruck , Bug , Eisenbühl , Hadermannsgrün , Rudolphstein , Schnarchenreuth and Tiefengrün were added.

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the population fell from 2525 to 2066 by 459 or by 18.2%. On December 31, 1996, Berg had 2,793 inhabitants.

Place name

Blazon : "In silver over a green three-mountain, a red sloping bar ."

Decisive for the reproduction of the coat of arms were above all seals by Ott vom Berge from the years 1358 and 1381. The coat of arms has been used since 1956.
