history
middle Ages
The place was first mentioned in 1323 as "Gerhartsgrün". Until recently, Geroldsgrün was always a border town between different sovereign territories, for example between the Diocese of Bamberg and the Counts of Orlamünde , and later between the Diocese and the Margraviate of Bayreuth-Kulmbach .
Modern times
A dark chapter was the witch hunt , which ended in Geroldsgrün and the surrounding area in 1654.
From 1500 the village was part of the Franconian Empire . As part of the Prussian principality of Bayreuth since 1792 , Geroldsgrün fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and became part of Bavaria in 1810 . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .
Until the reunification in 1990 Geroldsgrün was again a border town. The Echo 1 station of the Frankenwald barracks ( Naila ) was located near Steinbach am Langesbühl .
Incorporations
On July 1, 1972, the previously independent municipality of Dürrenwaid was incorporated. The communities of Langenbach and Steinbach bei Geroldsgrün followed on May 1, 1978.
Population development
In the period from 1988 to 2018, the population fell from 3505 to 2763 by 742 or 21.2%, which is the clearest decrease in the number of inhabitants in the district in the period mentioned.
Place name
The place name is documented as "Gerhartsgrün" (1323), "Gerharczgrun" (1326 to 1328), "Gerharczgrün" (1333), Geroltsgrün (1414) and "Geroldsgrün" (from 1692).
