history
Until the church is planted
Schauenstein was first mentioned in a document in 1230 . In 1291 the town was raised under the knights of Wolfstriegel . In 1386 they sold the place to the burgraves of Nuremberg . The Upper Office of the Prussian Principality of Bayreuth , which had been Prussian since 1792 , belonged to the Franconian Empire from 1500 . With this it fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and came to Bavaria in 1810 . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .
In 1622 a tipper mint was in operation here.
20th century
In 1924 the Helmbrechts – Selbitz railway line was opened with the railway station in Schauenstein. After the end of the Second World War in 1945, Schauenstein belonged to the American zone of occupation . The American military administration set up a DP camp to accommodate Jewish displaced persons (DP). Thousands had fled Poland and Eastern Europe to the protection of the Western allies because of anti-Semitic excesses. The camp was looked after by a team from UNRRA . A prisoner of war camp was set up in a former cotton twining mill . The SS doctor Josef Mengele , who was traveling without papers and using false names, was interned there for a few weeks in the summer of 1945. In 1976, passenger traffic on the Helmbrechts – Selbitz line was discontinued.
Incorporations
On January 1, 1972, the previously independent communities Neudorf and Volkmannsgrün were incorporated. On May 1, 1978 Haidengrün and Windischengrün were added.
