Heinrich Gradl (born February 13, 1842 in Eger , Bohemia ; † March 3, 1895 ibid) was a historian , linguist and naturalist, publicist and from 1878 to 1895 head of the city archive of Eger.

Life

Heinrich Gradl was born as the son of the painter and picture dealer Georg Adam Gradl and his wife Margaretha, daughter of the painter Georg Kölbl in Eger No. 327.

As a graduate of the high school in Eger, he studied German and history at the Charles University in Prague from 1860 . From 1863 to 1864 he published the bi- monthly publication Egeria , first became secretary of the advance fund in Eger and from 1869 initially worked for the Egerer Zeitung , then editor of its political section and from 1881 to 1884 publisher of the monthly Egerwellen with articles in Egerland dialect. In April 1878, after Vinzenz Prökl (1804-1887) , he took over the management of the Eger City Archives and remained city archivist until his fatal accident (he died of exhaustion after a lower leg amputation) in 1895.

In his capacity as archivist, Heinrich Gradl wrote numerous fundamental works on the history of the Egerland , the city of Eger and important personalities of the city. In particular, his research into the origins of the family of Count Schlik , owners of the nearby silver mine in Sankt Joachimsthal and burgraves of Elbogen Castle , attracted the attention of historians and genealogists. The Monumenta Egrana is considered to be his main work . Of the work originally conceived in several volumes, only the first volume was published until his untimely death. A bust of Heinrich Gradl has been put up in the Eger city archive in the Pachelbelhaus on the city's market square . His successor as archivist for the city of Eger was Karl Siegl .

Gradl married on November 23, 1869 in Eger Maria Elisabeth, geb. Autumn (* 1842 in Budweis ). Among other things, the son Hugo Gradl (* 1870 in Eger), a law student, writer and poet, who died at the age of 21 on June 27, 1890 of tuberculosis in Eger, emerged from this marriage . His literary estate was published by his father.

Gradl was a master at playing the traditional Egerland bagpipes (buck); Concert tours are said to have taken him far beyond the Egerland .
