The Schauenstein Castle is a spur castle in the town of Schauenstein in the Franconian Forest in the Hof district .
It was built around 1230 by Otto I von Schaumberg , who from then on called himself Otto von Schauenstein after his new castle in the Franconian Forest. He was ministerial of the Dukes of Andechs-Meranien from 1222 and died in 1237. His son Eberhard I and his grandsons Tuto and Heinrich III. von Schauenstein owned the castle until 1271. After that, the castle and court in Schauenstein were transferred to Heinrich's daughter. She married Konrad von Wolfstriegel , which means that Schauenstein came into the possession of this family and thus came under the influence of the Bailiffs of Weida and later to the Burgraves of Nuremberg . Then it became the seat of the officials of Brandenburg-Kulmbach , the first of which was Erhart von Machwitz .
The castle has been the seat of the Upper Franconian Fire Brigade Museum and the Schauenstein Local History Museum since 1988 .
