history

The hilltop castle Uprode was built around 1320 by the knights of Sparneck to secure their home country. Other neighboring Sparneck castles were the moated castle in Weißdorf , the seats of Sparneck , Stockenroth , Hallerstein , Gattendorf and the castles on the Waldstein . Uprode Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1373: The Sparneckers sold it to the Burgraves of Nuremberg , Heinrich von Kotzau was among the witnesses . Later ownership of the castle passed to the relatives of the von Lüchau family . It is believed that the castle was destroyed by the Hussites at this time . At the end of the 15th century, the Kotzau and Reitzenstein families moved into the castle, and the Reitzensteiner stake was sold to Georg Blassenberger at short notice .

The Sparnecker received the castle back in 1494. On July 11, 1523, however, it came to an abrupt end with the Swabian League . This destroyed numerous small castles in central Germany, the owners of which, as accomplices of the robber baron Thomas von Absberg, held kidnapped Nuremberg merchants prisoner. Although Melchior von Sparneck , Canon of Regensburg, received a small financial compensation as a co-owner due to the destruction, the responsibility of his brothers remained undisputed. With the destruction of their castles, the Sparnecker lost their influence in their ancestral area.

The castle has been in ruins since then . Remnants of walls, foundations and moats are visible in the forest. Scattered parts of the blown tower can still be seen clearly. Recently, display boards have been put up on the hiking trail that passes by. There has not yet been any security or excavation.

The cartographer Johann Christoph Stierlein completed a very precise map of the castle area for the first time in 1816 with the existing inventory.

By the hurricane Kyrill on 18 January 2007, the ruin suffered further damage.

In the woodcut the castle is shown as already destroyed. The troops blow up the keep , which is already on fire. It should be noted that the car that is on the way to the facility is signed "Bulver". This is the only identification on the barrels that can be seen on almost all cuts.
