The Oberkotzau Palace is a palace complex in the market Oberkotzau .

history

The history of the castle goes back to the residence of the von Kotzau family . The castle was destroyed several times, including in the Hussite Wars . In the 18th century the complex was largely in ruins and was rebuilt in the baroque style. Built-in elements of a tower and the chapel are still known. After the fire in 1852, the palace complex was built in its current form.

For the descendants of the "not befitting" association of Margrave Georg Albrecht the Younger , son of Georg Albrecht the Elder from the house of the Franconian Hohenzollern and the bourgeois Castner daughter Regina Magdalena Lutz from Lichtenberg , the name of the extinct knight family of Kotzau was reassigned and in the second Generation with the title of baron and an increased family coat of arms. The family moved into Oberkotzau Castle and lived there until 1962. They died out of the male line in 1976.

Location and appearance

The two-wing castle rises on a central hill above the market. At the foot of the hill, a short distance away, are the market square and the Protestant church.

Todays use

The left wing houses a dormitory for people with a mental disability of the Diakonie Hochfranken. The right wing is privately owned. Apartments can be rented there. Small utility buildings that were already part of the previous buildings have been preserved at the castle. The modern terrace open-air swimming pool is located on the grounds of the former castle park behind it.
