history

The castle was built in the second half of the 12th century by the servants of the Dukes of Merania . In the border area between Meran and episcopal property there were always disputes about the castle. These continued when the Counts of Orlamünde took over the Meran inheritance. Around 1325 and 1333 the complex was mentioned as a desert . Between 1374 and 1384 it was rebuilt by Count Otto X. von Orlamünde and finally demolished in 1385 following an agreement with the Bamberg prince-bishop Lamprecht von Brunn .

The castle was on the top of the Schloßberg above the Lamitztal . It is considered older than Wallenrode Castle and served to secure Lamitzstrasse in the border area. The neck moat and the double ring wall around the main castle on the approximately 24 × 8 meter large core hill are still preserved from the former castle complex.

The cartographer Johann Christoph Stierlein completed a very precise map of the castle area for the first time in 1816 with the existing inventory.
