Hallerstein Castle is a ruin in Hallerstein , today a district of Schwarzenbach an der Saale in the Upper Franconian district of Hof .

Hallerstein Castle was built near a Meierhof. A permanent seat since 1421 is suspected. The residents of Gettengrün settled in the newly developing village. Hallerstein was first mentioned in a document in 1439. The family of Sparneck received him as a Bohemian fief of Bohemia and Roman-German King Albrecht II. In the Frankish war in 1523 Hallerstein was not mentioned as the owner Wolf was not involved from Sparneck to the raids of his relatives. However, there is a woodcut of an unknown Weytzendorf castle , the location of which Hallerstein has already been considered several times. After the Hallerstein line of the family died out in 1562, the patrician family of the Hallerstein family was interested in buying it, but this did not materialize. In 1563 the place passed from Joachim Schlik , Count von Bassaun , to the Kulmbach Margrave Georg Friedrich , who set up a margravial office there. In 1835 a fire caused damage in the ruins and in 1887 it was ensured that the current building was erected above it to protect the cellar. The castle grounds have belonged to the Leuckart family in Weißdorf since 1951 .

The castle ruins on the Schlossberg are directly adjacent to the church. The remainder of a rectangular building has been preserved on the mountain spur . The eastern part was rebuilt as a single-storey building that houses a local museum. The western part is ruinous. Under the building there is a spacious basement with a barrel vault . The remains of the castle are a monument . The cartographer Johann Christoph Stierlein made an exact drawing of the ruins.

Originally the Schlossberg, which was also secured by a wall in the east, offered natural protection. The existing building is the remains of the main building, on which there was a tower. The parish church Hallerstein was part of the secured area and emerged from the castle chapel.
