The Postal Saalstein is an Outbound castle in Saalstein in the district of Hof in Bavaria .
history
Finds of bronze, Nuremberg pennies and castle ceramics indicate an early settlement. There was a castle here by the 12th century at the latest. The Burgstall, visible today on the steep bank of the Saale, was probably a Vorwerk . It was inhabited, as evidence of broken fragments shows. The actual castle was a few meters to the northwest, where the remains of a round tower can still be seen beyond the motorway . It was surrounded by a dry ditch that ran out on both sides of the slope , which is still clearly visible today. The Fattigsmühle was probably originally another stronghold of the castle: The small Saalenstein. Eustachius von Zedtwitz is said to have converted it into a mill. In 1524 the Saale was the border of the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Kulmbach and Saalenstein Castle had the meaning of a fort.
present
Today, at the foot of the castle hill, i.e. on the banks of the Saale, there are still some remains of the foundation and a vault driven into the embankment. The federal motorway 72 runs on the Burgberg . The remains of the castle consist of some stone walls behind a still clearly recognizable moat . The site is privately owned and is demarcated with a closed gate. The owner runs a restaurant there and has integrated the remains of the wall of the castle stables into a fantasy-like garden landscape.
