Stages and course of the race
The first stage, which started at the Algarve Stadium in Faro , contained only a few short climbs. Nevertheless, the expected mass sprint did not take place, instead the Belgian Philippe Gilbert from Omega Pharma-Lotto pulled away on the last kilometer and celebrated a narrow solo victory. The second section was flat, especially towards the end, with the German new professional John Degenkolb ( HTC-Highroad ) celebrating his first professional victory in the mass sprint. The third stage ended on a short but steep climb of almost three kilometers. Gilbert lost over a minute and had to hand over the overall lead to the winner of the day Steve Cummings ( Sky ProCycling ), who led a top group of five to the finish. Large gaps between the individual groups have not yet emerged.
The following day only came up with a few climbs. Again a German won the mass sprint , this time André Greipel , Gilbert's team-mate. The decision about overall victory was made in the final short time trial: day winner Tony Martin also won the yellow jersey.
