The village of Breternitz is located in the Thuringian Forest and has belonged to the municipality of Kaulsdorf since April 9, 1994 .

The place is about five kilometers as the crow flies southeast of the district town of Saalfeld / Saale in the area of ​​the Saale loops in a flood-protected location.
