Kakau is a district of the city of Oranienbaum-Wörlitz in the district of Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt .

Kakau is located south of the Elbe bank in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve . Only a few kilometers away is the Wörlitzer Park in the middle of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm , which was founded in the second half of the 18th century under the reign of Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau was created. The area around Gohrau is flat and is crossed by numerous ditches and streams. Extensive pine forests spread out towards the south - the northern foothills of the Düben Heath .

The eventful history of the place began as early as 1201 when it was mentioned in the Codex Diplomaticus Anhaltinus. There the place "Cacowe" was mentioned among the places that had to pay taxes to the Wörlitz church. Little can be learned about the history of the place until the beginning of the 17th century. Economically, the place has always been shaped by agriculture as the main branch of the economy. There are reports of large-scale hop and tobacco cultivation in Kakau.
During the Thirty Years' War , the place was burned down by Swedish troops on March 4, 1637 and then remained desolate for a long time . In 1653, a municipal code for the "resettlement of goods abandoned after the war" was issued, which led to success, because as early as 1662 Kakau was mentioned again as an inhabited place. With the resettlement, the affiliation to the church district apparently also changed, because in 1666 Kakau communicants were first mentioned in the Nischwitz church register. Up to now Kakau was parish in Wörlitz .
At the beginning of the 18th century, Prince Leopold I ("The Old Dessauer") began to expand the Kapengraben and to drain the marshland between Kakau and Wörlitz. He founded the place Horstdorf on June 21, 1708 in this area. At the same time, the dikes for the Elbe were built, but this did not prevent the area from being flooded in 1770.
The beginning of the 19th century was marked by the 4th coalition war between Napoleon and Prussia / Saxony. Even if there was no major fighting in the Wörlitzer Winkel, there were repeated reports of troop marches and looting from this time. Despite this burden, Kakau had developed into the largest village in the Oranienbaum district by 1867 with 826 residents and 129 houses.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Ernst Richter from Kakau founded the Kakau-Brandhorst volunteer fire brigade on February 20, 1913 , after a compulsory fire brigade was founded in the town as early as 1908 . During the First World War , the town had 41 casualties, and a war memorial was erected to commemorate them. During the Weimar Republic there were 107 agricultural and 6 commercial operations in Kakau. At the end of World War II there were 62 dead in the village and Kakau was occupied by the Soviet Army after a short march of American troops.
After the founding of the GDR , the individual farms were collectivized and grouped into different types of LPG . The establishment of a potato sorting plant and a cattle combine in 1967 also demonstrate the rural character of the place. Some services (hairdresser, post office and shops) improved living conditions in the community.
With the German reunification , the image of the community changed noticeably. After the dairy cattle plant and the potato sorting plant were closed, the two largest local employers ceased to exist. In addition, there was the loss of job opportunities in the nearby industry, e.g. B. in Vockerode (power plant and greenhouse facilities), Kapen (chemical plant) and Dessau (wagon construction). The newly emerging craft and service companies were only able to compensate for this to a small extent.
In 2007, the municipality of Kakau was incorporated into the Wittenberg district due to a district reform from the former Anhalt-Zerbst district.
On January 1, 2011, Kakau was incorporated into the new city of Oranienbaum-Wörlitz.

Kakau is on the L131 state road from Oranienbaum to Wittenberg . The connection to the federal autobahn 9 (Dessau-Ost) is approx. 10 km away. The nearest train station is in the municipality of Radis ( Wittenberg - Bitterfeld line ). The Oranienbaum station of the Dessau-Wörlitzer Railway is only 3 km away and is only served in the summer season.
