About this picture

The district of Anhalt-Zerbst was a district in the east of the state of Saxony-Anhalt . On July 1, 2007, it was dissolved as part of the district reform in Saxony-Anhalt and its area was divided into the new districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld , Jerichower Land and Wittenberg .

The district area extended north of the Elbe, which flows east-west in this area . The district got its name from the former principality of Anhalt-Zerbst , whose area essentially coincided with the previous district area. Neighboring districts of the district of Anhalt-Zerbst were the district of Jerichower Land and the Brandenburg district of Potsdam-Mittelmark in the north, the district of Wittenberg in the east, the independent city of Dessau and the district of Köthen in the south and the district of Schönebeck in the west .

On January 1, 2005, five communities were detached from the district: Rodleben and Brambach (incorporated into the city of Dessau ) and Dornburg, Ladeburg and Leitzkau (incorporated into the city of Gommern in the district of Jerichower Land ).

history

The district was created in 1994 by merging the districts of Zerbst and Roßlau with parts of the former district of Graefenhainichen .

coat of arms

Blazon : “ Shield quartered by the cross of the Teutonic Order . Fields 1 and 4 in silver three (2: 1) red roses (coat of arms of the Lords of Zerbst), fields 2 and 3 in red a silver eagle (coat of arms of the Counts of Lindau). The whole shield is placed as a heart shield on the new coat of arms of Anhalt , in a silver field on a red battlement wall with an open gate a black bear walking to the right. "(Approval on February 27, 1995)

The cross symbolizes the donation of the village Buro bei Coswig in 1258 to the Teutonic Knight Order by Count Bernhard I of Anhalt . Until the dissolution of the Teutonic Order in 1809 there was an order commandery . The roses go back to the coat of arms of the noble lords of Zerbst. The family had in 1209 by Emperor Heinrich VI. received the entitlement to the third part of the city of Zerbst. In 1253, the Ascanian Margraves of Brandenburg acquired the sovereignty of the castle and town of Zerbst. Then in 1264 the Lords of Zerbst sold their share to the Counts of Barby .

The silver eagle in red refers to the Counts of Lindau , whose headquarters in the Principality of Anhalt was the castle and the lordship of Lindau . They also owned Roßlau Castle. In 1370 Prince Albrecht von Anhalt acquired the rule as a pledge. Since the redemption did not take place, the rule remained in the possession of the Prince of Anhalt. The heart shield shows the coat of arms of the Free State of Anhalt .
