The district of Wernigerode was a district in the west of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. On July 1, 2007, it was incorporated into the new district of Harz as part of the regional reform in Saxony-Anhalt . Neighboring districts were the Halberstadt district in the north, the Quedlinburg district in the east, the Thuringian district of Nordhausen in the south and the Lower Saxony district of Goslar in the west .
geography
The Rappbode dam was in the district . The Brocken was located in the southwest of the district .
economy
The district of Wernigerode was a location for well-known companies such as For example: Rautenbach AG (casting of engine parts), ThyssenKrupp AG , Schneider, Hasseröder Brauerei GmbH, Pharma Wernigerode GmbH, Chocotech GmbH, VEM motors GmbH. Tourism was also an important branch of the economy.
traffic
The first connection of the district to the railway network was brought about in 1869 by the Magdeburg-Halberstädter railway company with its Halberstadt - Vienenburg route via Heudeber-Danstedt and Wasserleben; In Heudeber the branch line branched off to Wernigerode from 1872 , from where it was extended by the Prussian State Railway to Ilsenburg in 1884 and to Bad Harzburg in 1894.
Also from Halberstadt in 1873 the Halberstadt-Blankenburg Railway ran its route first to the city of Blankenburg and then in 1885/86 in the Braunschweig region with its Rübeland Railway via Elbingerode to Tanne. From 1899 it was possible to continue from here on the narrow-gauge South Harz Railway via Sorge - Brunnenbachsmühle to Braunlage.
The Halberstadt-Blankenburg Railway Company opened a branch line from Langenstein to Derenburg on its main line in 1880, which was continued twenty years later to Minsleben and thus established a cross-connection to Wernigerode. In 1907 they also built a line from Blankenburg to Thale-Bodetal with a branch from Timmenrode to Quedlinburg (so - called Quäke ).
In the 1890s, the network of today's Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH was created, which can be traced back to two earlier companies. First, the 1891/92 led Gernrode-Harzgerode Railway Company on anhaltischem area the Selketalbahn via stairs to Hasselfelde. Then the Nordhausen-Wernigeroder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (NWE) began building the Harzquerbahn on Prussian territory in 1898/99 via Elend und Sorge, where it crossed the Südharz Railway, and on via Benneckenstein to the Eisfelder Talmühle . There, the network was linked with the Stiege - Eisfelder Talmühle (1905) route of the "Gernrode-Harzgeroder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft". The crowning glory was the NWE railway from Drei Annen Hohne via Schierke to the 1120 m high Brocken, which can be reached without the aid of a cogwheel. From 1907 the Elbingerode West - Drei Annen-Hohne line of the Halberstadt-Blankenburg Railway Company served as a further feeder.
The rail network had a maximum length of 176 km; it was shortened by 71 kilometers by 2007:
- 1919: Derenburg - Minsleben 5 km
- 1945: Stapelburg - Eckertal 1 km; Water life - Vienenburg 2 km; Brunnenbachsmühle - Sorge = M = 2 km
- 1958: Sorge - Tanne SHB = M = 3 km
- 1964: Elbingerode West - Drei Annen-Hohne 6 km
- 1968: Königshütte - Tanne 7 km; Langenstein - Derenburg 4 km
- 1969: Heudeber-Danstedt - Mulmke - Mattierzoll Süd 4 km; Timmenrode - Weddersleben - Quedlinburg 1 km
- 1973: Blankenburg - Timmenrode - Thale Bodetal 8 km
- 1999: Elbingerode - Königshütte 5 km; Heudeber-Danstedt - water life - Osterwieck 10 km
- 2005: Blankenburg - Elbingerode 18 km
(The kilometers indicated refer to the proportion in the district area)
Connex Sachsen-Anhalt GmbH was entrusted with the passenger traffic on the standard gauge network ; In addition, Deutsche Bahn's regional express trains ran the Halle (Saale) –Wernigerode – Hanover route.
