The Gernrode-Harzgeroder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (GHE) was a private railway company in Germany which operated the Selketalbahn ( Gernrode - Hasselfelde , Alexisbad - Harzgerode and Stiege - Eisfelder Talmühle railway ). In Eisfelder Talmühle station there was a connection to the network of the Nordhausen-Wernigeroder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (NWE).

history

On May 10, 1886, the Gernrode-Harzgeroder Railway Company was founded with the aim of connecting smaller businesses in the Eastern Harz to the railway network by means of a railway line. After the experience with the Feldabahn in Thuringia , a decision was made in the concession of March 1887 for the meter gauge and a railway line from Gernrode to Harzgerode and Silberhütte for cost reasons . Gernrode had a railway connection since 1885.

The first section of the Gernrode – Mägdesprung section was opened on August 7, 1887. Gradually, the network was expanded until July 15, 1905, the Eisfelder Talmühle station, and thus the largest expansion. The GHE countered the increasing motor traffic in the 1930s with a new diesel multiple unit ( GHE T 1 ) and its own bus routes.

From April to May 1945 traffic on the GHE routes was idle. In April 1946, with the exception of the Eisfelder Talmühle – Stiege – Hasselfelde and Straßberg – Flussspatschacht line, all tracks were dismantled as reparations to the Soviet Union . The management between Eisfelder Talmühle and Hasselfelde went to the NWE on April 15, 1946. The GHE with the remaining facilities and buildings was nationalized on June 30, 1946.

From October 1946 the reconstruction of the line from Gernrode to Harzgerode and Straßberg began. The GHE did not see the completion in July 1949, since April 1st the line and the facilities were under the administration of the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

Bus transport

From the 1920s onwards, buses competed with the railways, so that many railway administrations operated their own bus routes. The GHE initially opened its own bus routes on February 24, 1925 with the participation of "Ostharzbahnen GmbH". Since the traffic on the lines developed favorably, among other things because the timetables of the bus and train were coordinated, the GHE procured further buses in the 1930s and in 1933 took over the Ostharzbahnen GmbH concession for further bus routes.

During the Second World War , the GHE had to surrender several buses and trucks that had been procured for the transport of express goods, so that motor traffic had to be almost completely stopped. After the end of the war in 1945, some of the vehicles were returned. In 1946 the railroad operation and the motor transport were separated, the latter continued to exist as an independent company.
