Hans-Günter Schimmöller (born September 25, 1935 in Berlin ; † February 23, 2015 ) was a German football player .

Player career

Growing up in Prenzlauer Berg , he started playing soccer at SG Nordring in 1949 as a youth . At the age of 18 he moved to BFC Alemannia 90 , for which Schimmöller played two seasons before moving to Hertha BSC , where he was to experience the most successful period of his career. He won a total of five Berlin championship titles with the old lady and qualified three times ( 56/57 , 60/61 and 62/63 ) for the final round of the German championship, where he played all 15 games. However, each time it was the end of the line after the group stage. In 1956/57, Schimmöller immediately played all 22 rounds of the championship success in Berlin under coach Gerhard Krüger ; as well as Helmut Faeder , Wolfgang Feldhahn and Kurt Großmann. His first game in the final round of the German soccer championship turned out to be a memorable event: On June 2, 1957, Hertha lost 1:14 to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the stadium at the Zoo in Wuppertal, after a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute by Werner Lange. The otherwise stable runner row with Kurt Manthey , Günter Schüler and the left wing runner Schimmöller could not prevent the offensive power of the players around the Walter brothers.

Hertha ended the league era in 1962/63 with the championship win, to which Schimmöller had contributed a hit in 27 missions, mostly as a left defender. Hans-Joachim Altendorff had scored 41 goals in 26 league appearances, pushing Helmut Faeder to 2nd place in the top scorer list with 15 goals. In the final round of the German soccer championship before the start of the Bundesliga, Hertha were clearly inferior to the top clubs 1. FC Köln (10: 2 points) and 1. FC Nürnberg (8: 4 points) and only played against the Southwest representative 1. FC Kaiserslautern at eye level. Schimmöller played alongside defender colleague Klaus Heuer in all six group games .

In 1963, Hertha BSC was a founding member of the Bundesliga . Schimmöller was given a very special honor: On August 24, 1963 (1st matchday), he scored the first Bundesliga goal with the hand penalty converted in the 63rd minute for a 1-1 draw (also the final score) against 1. FC Nürnberg Club history. This goal was also his only Bundesliga goal in 59 point games.

During his time with the Blue-Whites , he also made three appearances in the European Cup: In the 1961/62 season he played two games for the Berlin city selection in the Messestädte Cup . However, he and his team failed in the first round at the eventual finalists FC Barcelona . Schimmöller later took part twice with Hertha BSC, but again he failed in the first round. 1963/64 to the Italians from AS Roma and the following year to the Belgian representative Royal Antwerp .

Even if he was a fixture for years as a left defender, especially in Berlin football and was often on the verge of jumping into the national team , this dream did not come true because Karl-Heinz Schnellinger was set on his position . After his successful time at Hertha BSC, Schimmöller moved back to Alemannia 90 for one season in 1967. From 1968 on, he played 113 league games for Hertha Zehlendorf , with which he won two more Berlin championships in 1969 and 1970, before finally becoming active in 1973 at the age of 37 Career ended.

Private

After his active career he worked as a representative for the Schultheiss brewery in Berlin. Schimmöller was married and the father of two daughters. He died on February 23, 2015 at the age of 79.
