Schmatzfeld is a district of the municipality of Nordharz in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .
geography
Geographical location
The place is about seven kilometers north of Wernigerode on the federal highway 244 .
history
Schmatzfeld was first mentioned in a document on July 26, 1259 as Smatvelde . The document confirms the acquisition of two pieces of land near Schmatzfeld by Count Gebhard I von Wernigerode von Adelheid von Ravensberg, widow of Ludwig . A medieval cemetery with 30 burials from the 13th and 14th centuries, uncovered in 1984, suggests that there was a church in the parish and that the place had reached a certain size. In 1471, however, the village was described as abandoned, which is likely to be related to a desert period in the Middle Ages.
At the end of the 15th century a Vorwerk of the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode was built on the area of the abandoned village , which quickly gained economic importance.
The domain Schmatzfeld was up for sale in 1930, the largest agricultural commodity in the former county of Wernigerode .
Settler families then founded 44 farmsteads, some of which matured into very well-run farms during the second third of the 20th century. These farmsteads formed the basis of the local LPG , which still exists today as the Bundschuh agricultural cooperative .
On January 1, 2010, the previously independent communities Schmatzfeld, Danstedt , Heudeber , Langeln , Abbenrode , Stapelburg , Veckenstedt and Wasserleben merged to form the unitary community of North Harz .
coat of arms
The coat of arms was approved by the district on August 18, 2009.
Blazon : "Split of green and silver, in front two golden ears of wheat in stacks, at the back 5 black diagonal bars spanned by a left red thread."
The colors of the former municipality are yellow-green.
The coat of arms was designed by the Magdeburg municipal heraldist Jörg Mantzsch .
