history

King Lothar III. confirmed on June 13, 1129 that the sale of the Abbenrode farm in the Harzgau in the duchy of Duke Heinrich by Count Palatine Friedrich von Putelendorf to Gebhard von Lochten had been confirmed in his presence. Abbenrode was the seat of a monastery that was largely destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525, abolished in 1554 and has now completely disappeared.

Abbenrode was characterized by its proximity to the former inner-German border. Many farms fell into disrepair and there was hardly any immigration. However, this has changed since the opening of the border. The inner-German border fell here at 8 a.m. on January 27, 1990, and access via Lochtum was guaranteed. Another connection to Wennerode in the north was also established. Abbenrode is growing slowly with a zoning plan that was passed in May 1996, the connection to the federal motorway 36 and the construction of an industrial area.

On January 1, 2010, the previously independent communities of Abbenrode, Danstedt , Heudeber , Langeln , Schmatzfeld , Stapelburg , Veckenstedt and Wasserleben merged to form the unitary community of North Harz .

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved by the Harz district on March 16, 2009 and registered in the Saxony-Anhalt state archive under No. 10/2009.

Blazon : "Diagonally divided by red and green with a right silver thread, above a golden millstone with a free grinding eye and two turned away golden ears of corn after the division, below a slanted golden key with a beard towards the edge of the shield and a square lock blade."

Referring to the earlier monastery, which contributed to the development of the place, to the fact that Abbenrode was a mill village and agriculture was an essential economic basis for the inhabitants, Abbenrode created a coat of arms in self-experiment and also established it, the one in a diagonally divided red -green sign showing key, mill wheel and ear of wheat.

This coat of arms did not correspond to the heraldic rules in several essential positions and could not be approved in this form. The municipal council therefore commissioned the Magdeburg municipal heraldist Jörg Mantzsch with the design and inclusion in the approval process. Instead of the water wheel, the heraldist chose a millstone to make it easy to recognize.

The colors of the district are yellow - green.

flag

The flag is yellow-green (1: 1) striped (horizontal shape: stripes running horizontally, lengthways shape: stripes running vertically) and centered with the municipal coat of arms.
